Tackling complex challenges, collaborating with colleagues all around the world and achieving unique goals together. NTS is a first-tier contract manufacturer that develops, produces and assembles complex (opto-) mechatronic systems and modules. At our specialized site, NTS Optel, we focus on design and assembly of custom opto-mechanics in the field of illumination, imaging, sensing, laser beam delivery and integrated nanostructure metrology solutions. We create customized solutions with high complexity and are active in the semicon, analytical, health and industrial market.

Are you passionate about technology? Are you a Master's student seeking an engaging tech assignment? Are you interested in an opportunity in a dynamic hi-tech environment? Then come join NTS Optel in Nijmegen. Accelerate along with us!

Job Description:

At NTS, we are constantly exploring new technologies to enhance our value proposition to our customers. The internships we offer are centered around one of these emerging technologies. Under the guidance of one of our experienced optical engineers, we expect you to bring a driven and enthusiastic approach. In return, you will receive a stipend. Included below are 4 assignments to choose from.

Assignments:

A. Deflectometry System:

The assignment is to design, build and test a deflectometry system.

  • The assignment consists of the following components:
  • Conducting an in-depth literature study
  • Comparing the advantages of various solutions and estimating achievable accuracy
  • Designing a setup for the most promising solution
  • Constructing a test setup in the laboratory
  • Developing test software to analyze shape from images.
  • Experimentally validating performance against theoretical model

B. Interferometric Focus Sensor:

The objective is to design and, if time allows, construct and assess a shearing interferometer for focus measurement.

  • The assignment consists of the following components:
  • Conducting an in-depth literature study
  • Comparing the advantages of different solutions (e.g., conoscopic, radial shear, lateral shear)
  • Designing a setup for the most promising solution
  • Selecting necessary components

If time permits:

  • Constructing a test setup in the laboratory
  • Experimentally verifying performance

C. Structured illumination depth sensor

Depth sensing can be achieved by combining an imaging system (camera) with an off-axis structured illuminator. Using parallax (triangulation) the depth information can be retrieved. Different illumination structures can be used such as a phase stepping sine profile or a binary successive approximation profile. Maximum flexibility is achieved with a programmable pattern. This can be achieved using a DLP or LCOS device. Note that a structured illuminator can also be used in a microscope to achieve sectioning and / or super resolution.

The assignment is to design and, if time permits, build and test a structured illumination projector. The assignment consists of the following components:

  • Literature study
  • Market scan of commercially available devices (DLP, LCOS, …)
  • Comparing the merits of different solutions
  • Design a setup for the most promising solution.
  • Select components needed
  • If time permits:
  • Build a test setup in the lab
  • Experimentally verify the performance

D. MEMS based confocal optical microscope

Micromechanical scanning mirrors have been available for some time now. They potentially offer low cost, small size and fast laser scanning. In this assignment we want to explore the possibilities of commercially available MEMS mirrors, applied to confocal microscopy. The assignment is to design and, if time permits, build and test a confocal microscope based on MEMS scanning mirrors.

The assignment consists of the following components:

  • Literature study
  • Market scan of commercially available MEMS scanners
  • Comparing the merits of different solutions (e.g. single mirror, dual mirror, re-scan, Lissajous vs raster scan)
  • Design a setup for the most promising solution
  • Select components needed

If time permits:

  • Build a test setup in the lab
  • Experimentally verify the performance

Job Requirements:

  • Master's student (Applied Physics)
  • Strong interest in optics and software development

About NTS

We accelerate innovation at NTS. How do we do this? With our technical expertise we provide (opto)mechatronic systems and mechanical modules from A to Z, thus improving our clients' technical innovations. We do this for clients who are active in the semiconductor, health, analytical and optical industries. NTS is involved throughout the process, from the drawing-board to the test phase. For us, "Accelerating the Future" also means that we strive for long-term relationships with both our clients and employees.
