De 15-jarige Laura Westerik en de 17-jarige Charlotte van Kleef zijn afgelopen zaterdag met hun Bemmelse basketballteam Batouwe kampioen van Nederland geworden in de U18 leeftijdscategorie.
De twee Nijmeegse basketballsters die beiden al enige tijd uitkomen voor de nationale jeugdteams, werden nog niet eerder met hun ploeg Nederlands kampioen.
De ploeg van de jonge Nijmeegse topbasketballsters moest tijdens de Nederlandse Kampioenschappen afrekenen met vier andere teams verdeeld over twee dagen. Tijdens de eerste dag werd de regerend kampioen RTC Noord uit Groningen en de kampioen van het zuiden, Almonte Eindhoven, getroffen. Beide teams werden eenvoudig verslagen. Het vuurwerk kwam op de tweede dag. Titelkandidaten Den Helder en Grasshoppers uit Katwijk moesten verslagen worden. En dat lukte met respectievelijk 57-56 en 61-53.
Laura Westerik wist tijdens de finale tegen Grasshoppers de Katwijkse topper Fleur Kuijt uit de wedstrijd te houden. Charlotte van Kleef werd in alle vier NK-wedstrijden topscorer met respectievelijk 18, 20, 14 en 17 punten.
Beide speelsters hebben een druk zomerprogramma met de Nederlandse selectie voor de boeg. Charlotte van Kleef speelt van 17 tot en met 27 juli de Europese U18- Kampioenschappen in de A-divisie in Matoshinos in Portugal. Gepoogd wordt om het resultaat van vorig jaar, toen zij vierde van Europa werd, te overtreffen. Mogelijk kwalificeert Charlotte van Kleef zich ook nog met het 3×3 U18 Nederlands team voor de Jeugd Olympische Spelen in Nanjing in China eind augustus. Ondertussen probeert Laura Westerik met het U16 Nederlands team van 31 juli tot en met 10 augustus in Talinn, Estland om tijdens de Europese Kampioenschappen voor B-landen weer terug in de A-divisie te komen.
Na de zomer zullen beide speelsters niet meer uitkomen voor het Bemmelse Batouwe. Beiden zullen hun aandacht volledig richten op de talentenopleiding van de basketball bond, het CTO in Amsterdam. Dit is een ploeg van jeugdinternationals die uitkomt in de dameseredivisie.
