De taak van Janssen was vanaf de eerste dag duidelijk, NEC behoeden voor degradatie. Het werd een lang seizoen en de definitieve ommekeer kwam eigenlijk geen moment. NEC ontliep met kunst en vliegwerk directe degradatie, maar vloog er in de eerste de beste ronde van de play-offs alsnog uit, NEC verloor tot 2x toe van Sparta uit Rotterdam. Voor Anton Janssen is daarmee nu dus een einde gekomen aan een roerige periode NEC.
De contractontbinding komt niet uit de spreekwoordelijke lucht vallen, vorige week werd ook al melding gemaakt van een breuk, maar die werd toen niet definitief naar buiten gebracht. Janssen kreeg een aanbod als assistent aan te blijven bij NEC onder een nieuwe hoofdtrainer, maar Janssen zag dat naar verluid niet zitten.
Anton Janssen zal als oud-speler teleurstellend terugkijken op zijn periode als hoofdtrainer bij de Nijmegenaren. Hij wist 29 punten te verzamelen in 30 wedstrijden.
